A Mid-Century Modern Kitchen That Stayed True to the Home
Some projects just click from the very beginning, and this was one of them.
From our very first meeting, we knew we were a great fit for these homeowners. They were wonderful to work with, and we immediately fell in love with both them and their incredible mid-century modern home. This style has always been one of Emily's favorites, so designing a kitchen that honored the home's original character was something we were especially excited about.
Their biggest goal wasn't to create a trendy kitchen; it was to create one that looked like it had always belonged there. They wanted the new space to feel authentic to the home while improving the layout, storage, and functionality.
Having experienced some disappointing contractors in the past, they understandably came into the project with a little hesitation. One of our biggest priorities was making sure they felt comfortable every step of the way. We wanted them to trust not only the quality of our work, but also our process and communication. By the end of the project, we had built a relationship that made this remodel even more rewarding.
The homeowners also knew exactly what they wanted from a design perspective, which always makes for a fun collaboration. They had a clear vision, and our job was to bring it to life while making sure every detail worked together beautifully.
Preserving the Character While Improving the Function
One of the most important design decisions was preserving as much of the original cabinetry as possible. Those cabinets were part of the home's history, and the homeowners wanted to keep that character intact.
Instead of starting over, we reworked the layout to make it more functional. We removed an underutilized stair railing that was taking up valuable space and replaced it with a custom-built peninsula that was carefully designed to match the existing cabinetry.
We also removed the soffits throughout the kitchen, allowing us to extend the cabinets all the way to the ceiling for significantly more storage. Additional cabinetry was added above the sink and carried across the doorway into the dining room, creating a more cohesive look while maximizing every inch of space.
The result was a kitchen that felt larger, flowed better, and provided the storage the homeowners had been missing, all without losing the home's original charm.
Overcoming Unexpected Challenges
Like many remodels in older homes, this project came with a few surprises.
As we opened walls, we uncovered some electrical work from previous renovations that needed to be corrected before moving forward. Thankfully, our team worked through each issue and made sure everything was updated properly and safely.
To make things even more interesting, the project took place during a stretch of back-to-back snow and ice storms. The weather created several scheduling challenges, but through careful planning and communication, we kept the project moving and delivered the finished kitchen the homeowners had been dreaming about.
We also installed a dedicated under-sink water filtration system with its own filtered water faucet and completed the kitchen with a full set of new appliances.
A Kitchen Full of Personality
One of our favorite parts of this remodel was helping the homeowners create a kitchen that reflected their personality while staying true to the home's mid-century roots.
Originally, they dreamed of terrazzo countertops. After exploring the costs, we found a beautiful quartz alternative that captured the same look while fitting comfortably within their budget.
The colorful finishes are what truly make this kitchen unforgettable. Bright yellow base cabinets became the focal point of the space, while crisp white upper cabinets kept the room feeling light and balanced. A soft turquoise-blue backsplash added another layer of personality without overwhelming the design.
To complete the space, we installed decorative pendant lighting above the peninsula along with additional lighting throughout the kitchen, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that completely transformed the room.
One of Our Favorite Projects
This remodel wasn't just about creating a beautiful kitchen it was about restoring confidence after previous contractor experiences and giving these homeowners a space they genuinely love.
By the end of the project, we had built more than a new kitchen. We had built a lasting relationship with two homeowners who trusted us throughout the entire process, and that means just as much to us as the finished space itself.
Projects like this remind us why we love what we do. Watching a vision come to life, preserving the character of a special home, and seeing homeowners thrilled with the final result is what makes every challenge worthwhile.
